Upcoming Concert: Wed. Mar. 4 at the Broadway Theatre
Join us at the Broadway Theatre for a musical pilgrimage across time, geography, and the human experience.
Opening the program is the Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Nick Fanner. As 'wayfarers' through sound, we begin our journey in the quiet, reflective beauty of the natural world. From the delicate bloom of Autumn Rose to the vast, untamed expanses of Wilderness, we explore the grounding power of the earth beneath our feet.
In the haunting strains of Wayfaring Stranger, we hear the timeless song of the traveler seeking rest, followed by the vibrant, celebratory energy of The Genius of Ray Charles—a tribute to a pioneer who found a way to turn personal struggle into universal joy.
Our journey concludes as we revisit the foundational structure of the wind band through the classic Overture for Winds, before finally reaching the cosmic wonder of Diamond Tide.
The second half of this musical journey features the Jazz Band under the direction of Doug Gilmour. From timeless big band hits such as “Hayburner” to the more contemporary sounds of jazz such as God Bless the Child, you will be subject to an incredible treat from our 40-piece jazz ensemble.
Tickets are available from the Broadway Theatre Box Office or members of the Wind Ensemble or the Jazz Band at $15/ticket.

Saskatoon Community Bands present CHIAROSCURO, featuring the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Nick Fanner, and the Jazz Band under the direction of Doug Gilmour. Chiaroscuro – A term borrowed from the world of art, literally means from “dark to light”. It is both a technique and a concept. It is a means of transitioning from shadows to light, or a means of creating contrasts. In a musical sense, it can be the contrast of major to minor keys, the emotional contrast of louds and softs, or the change of tempo. The repertoire in this concert from both performing ensembles will exemplify each of those techniques, providing for a truly exciting and energized listening experience. From the dark of "The Lord of the Rings” to the uplifting almost angelic writing of Eric Whitacre’s “Lux Aurumque”, the contrast of the dark and the light has never been more apparent.

The first half of the program will feature the Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Nick Fanner. Majestic Vistas is a descriptive musical narrative as we paint pictures not with paint but with sound, taking the listener to the awesome mountains of the Colorado Peaks, across the Pacific Ocean to visit one of the best-known displays of grandeur, Mount Fiji, and relaxing with a simple stroll As I Wander Through the Meadow. In keeping with the theme of relaxing vistas the program will close with a stroll through the Austrian Alps as we relive the Sound of Music.
Following the intermission the stage will belong to the Jazz Band under the direction of Doug Gilmour. This 40-piece group is unique in the sense of its non-traditional instrumentation including flutes, clarinets & oboes along with the standard fare of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and of course a rhythm section. Repertoire for this concert will delve into a broad range of styles tempos both familiar and contemporary.
